A 23-year-old transgendered woman was shot and killed in the District, and the police are investigating as a possible hate crime, authorities said.

At around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 6100 block of Dix Street NE, the victim was approached by two men and words were exchanged, police said. One of the suspects pulled out a handgun and fatally shot the victim, identified by police as Myles McLean, of the Trinidad neighborhood in Northeast Washington.

Capt. Michael Farish, head of the homicide branch, said the exchange was brief and there was no announcement of a robbery and nothing mentioned about sexual orientation.

There was not enough information at this time to say whether McLean was killed because she was trangendered, Farish said.

“The victim was transgendered, we have to consider every possibility,” Farish said.

The area is considered a place were prostitutes work, police said.

One of the suspects was described as a short dark complected man with a handgun. The other was taller and light complected, police said.
