Entrepreneur Andrew Yang claimed President Trump’s election was the result of a “fourth industrial revolution.”
CNN kicked off the fourth round of presidential debates Tuesday night by asking about the impeachment inquiry facing Trump, but Yang diverted to discuss the changing economy.
“I support impeachment,” said Yang. “But we shouldn’t have any illusions that impeaching Donald Trump will be one, successful or, two, erase the problems that got him elected in 2016.”
Yang told the crowd that he believed Trump won Ohio in 2016 because the American economy “got rid of 300,000 manufacturing jobs” and replaced them with technological advancements. He blamed companies like Amazon for the increase in automation and the decrease in small businesses.
“These are the problems that got Donald Trump elected: the fourth industrial revolution,” said Yang.
Yang urged his fellow Democrats to discuss the problems automation could cause, saying, “When we are talking about [Trump], we are losing.”
His solution to this industrial revolution is a universal basic income of $1,000 per month to all Americans.
