Police are working to determine the cause of death of a man in his 40s whose body was found floating in a shallow creek in Rockville on Wednesday night.
Montgomery County police spokeswoman Lucille Bauer said Thursday that the man was drinking alcohol and playing soccer with friends at about 5 p.m. Wednesday. Within two hours, he apparently vanished. One of the friends found him face-down in some water on the 12800 block of Veirs Mill Road shortly after 7 p.m. The water was said to be only a few feet deep.
Bauer said emergency responders pronounced the man dead at the scene. An autopsy will be performed by the medical examiner in Baltimore.
As of Thursday afternoon, police were not confirming that the case was a drowning, and officials had not yet made contact with the victim’s family in order to be able to release his name to the public.
The investigation is a joint effort by Montgomery County detectives and the Maryland National Capital Parks Police. Bauer said there’s no evidence yet that indicates a crime was committed.
