The Russian Ministry of Defense said on Sunday it struck a military airfield in southern Ukraine loaded with weapons and ammunition from the United States and Europe.
The ministry claimed a “high-precision” Onyx missile was used by Russian forces to destroy the airfield’s runway and a hanger holding the weapons and ammunition. The alleged attack occurred at the main airport of the Ukrainian city of Odesa. The regional governor of Odesa, Maksym Marchenko, said the missile was launched from the Russian-annexed region of Crimea.
“High-precision missiles ‘Onyx’ in the Odesa region at a military airfield destroyed a hangar with weapons and ammunition received from the United States and European countries, and also destroyed the runway,” the Russian Ministry of Defense said in a Telegram post on Sunday.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that a newly constructed runway in the Black Sea port city had been destroyed in a late-night address on Saturday, and he vowed to rebuild it.

“We will, of course, rebuild it. But Odesa will never forget Russia’s behavior toward it,” Zelensky said.
The Ukrainian leader did not say whether any weapons, ammunition, or equipment provided by the U.S. or Europe were destroyed in the airstrike.
Last week, the Biden administration proposed a $33 billion spending bill that includes $20 billion for weapons, ammunition, and other military assistance for Ukraine.

The U.S. has allocated nearly $4 billion in military aid for Ukraine since Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion.
