Another Republican congressman from Texas is planning to retire, making him the fourth from the state to announce in recent weeks that he won’t run for reelection in 2020.
Rep. Kenny Marchant will announce his retirement Monday, according to the New York Times.
Marchant, who represents a suburban Dallas district, was first elected to Congress in 2004. The margins of victory he saw in previous races shrunk to three points in the 2018 midterms in a state that is becoming more competitive for Democrats.
Marchant becomes the 11th House Republican to announce retirement or to seek another office in the upcoming election. Only three House Democrats have said they won’t run again.
Democrats currently have a 37-seat majority in the lower chamber and are hoping they can increase their margins in 2020 with wins in Texas. Texas Republican Reps. Pete Olson, Will Hurd, and K. Michael Conaway have also announced they’ll be stepping down.
