Russian foreign minister to visit North Korea: Report

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will travel to North Korea in the near future, a new report says.

Reuters reports that North Korea’s Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho extended an invitation for Lavrov to visit. It is uncertain when Lavrov’s visit would occur, or why he was invited in the first place.

The report comes after President Trump revealed Sunday that a U.S. delegation was sent to North Korea to make arrangements for a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Trump announced last week the cancellation of the summit — originally scheduled for June 12 — before leaving the door open for future negotiations in the subsequent days.

On Tuesday, the White House confirmed that preparations for a summit are underway.

“We’re planning as if it is happening and … we’re expecting that to take place,” press secretary Sarah Sanders told reporters aboard Air Force One. “If it takes place on June 12, we’re going to be prepared. If it for some reason takes place at a later date, we’re going to be prepared for that as well.”
