RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The state Museum of History is scheduled to hold a symposium in conjunction with its exhibit “Freedom Coming, Freedom for All” that focuses on the end of slavery.
A symposium set for Saturday includes a panel discussion on human rights and the Constitution. Attorney and N.C. Central University professor Irving Joyner will moderate the discussion, which will include state Supreme Court Justice Cheri Beasley, Superior Court Judge Toby Fitch and former state Supreme Court Justice Willis Whichard.
The group will discuss how the Emancipation Proclamation and the 13th Amendment led to freedom and the process of securing constitutional rights for all people in the U.S.
The exhibit features the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, which is on loan from the National Archives in Washington, D.C. It closes June 16.
