WWII plane crashes in Kansas after flyovers for Memorial Day

A World War II-era plane that was conducting flyovers on Memorial Day crashed in Kansas on Monday.

The 1943 Fairchild PT-23A ran out of fuel while approaching the runway at Westport Airport in Wichita, and the engine failed. The pilot attempted to restart the engine but was unable to do so, according to a crash report from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The aircraft, a trainer plane for the U.S. Army Air Forces, hit at least one pole and clipped the ground before crash-landing, according to the Wichita Eagle.

The pilot, a 46-year-old male from Mulvane, Kansas, and a female passenger suffered minor injuries and were taken to the hospital.

The plane is part of the Commemorative Air Force-Jayhawk Wing and was doing flyovers across Kansas, KWCH reported.
