D.C. police still are looking for the man who four years ago stole a tow truck and then ran over the owner as he tried to stop the theft.

The incident happened at on March 26, 2005, in the parking lot of the Safeway grocery store on Alabama Avenue in Southeast Washington, and police are hoping that someone will come forward to find the killer.

Bennie Lee Perry, a 67-year-old who worked for ABC Tow Truck, had just exited the grocery store when he saw someone behind the wheel of his rig, D.C. police said. Investigators said they believed Perry rushed to his truck, jumped on the running board and struggled with the culprit, who kept driving.

Perry was pushed or fell from the truck and was run over by one of the rear wheels, police said.

Perry was taken by ambulance to Howard University Hospital. On his way there, Perry gave a police officer an account of what happened, police said. Perry, who lived on the 2400 block of Hartford Street SE, died a week later as a result of the injuries he sustained.

Police found the white tow truck the day after the incident near 47th and East Capitol streets NE. Crime scene technicians combed it for clues, but police have not obtained enough evidence to make an arrest in this homicide.

Police are hoping that someone might have information that can help them close the case. The incident happened in daytime in a busy parking lot on the day before Easter. Police said witnesses might not have realized they were watching a crime.

Anyone with information regarding the death of Bennie Lee Perry is asked to call D.C. police at 202-727-9099. Police offer a $25,000 reward for information that leads to a conviction.
