Rep. Todd Rokita likes props.
In his third campaign ad, the Indiana Republican uses poster board and a #MAGA hat to argue that he most closely aligns with President Trump and he alone is best qualified to defeat incumbent Democrat Sen. Joe Donnelly.
“I’m Todd Rokita, and here’s the truth: We’re not going to beat Joe Donnelly with a RINO. Mike Braun: He is a lifelong Democrat,” Rokita says while holding a photo of the businessman who joined the Republican party in 2012. “He voted for Obama or Hillary. Wow.”
“Luke Messer,” Rokita continues flipping his poster to show a picture of his other opponent. “He plotted with the Never-Trumpers to steal the nomination from President Trump,” Rokita says, referring to an April 2016 interview where Messer floated the idea of dark horse candidate at the Republican National Convention. “You’ve gotta be kidding me.”
Finally, the candidate puts on a red MAGA hat, turns to the camera, and says “I’m Todd Rokita, and I will proudly stand with our president and Mike Pence to drain the swamp.”
Compared to his other spots, this one is pretty simple and maybe even a little bit boring. Rokita drank a beer, shot an AR-15, and pushed to make English the official U.S. language in one ad. He piloted a little prop-plane in another, flying sick kids to faraway hospitals.
But about a month away from the primary, Rokita seems to be returning to the fundamentals of his campaign. The ad does just that.
