Americans are used to both political parties bending over backwards to appeal to the middle class, who make up the majority of voters in the United States. But Israel is a parliamentary democracy, meaning parties can focus on winning over a narrower constituency, and still be power players when it comes time for the new Prime Minister to form a coalition government. That’s how you get ads like this one from the ultra-Orthodox Shas party, which is trying to appeal to the poor.
