At the White House press briefing today, Keith Koffler of Roll Call asked press secretary Robert Gibbs for a response to C-SPAN’s request to film upcoming health care talks on Capitol Hill.
KOFFLER: A question on health care. C-SPAN television is requesting leaders in Congress to open up the debate to their cameras, and I know this is something that the president talked about on the campaign trail. Is this something that he supports, will be pushing for?
GIBBS: I — I — I have not seen that letter. I know the president is going to beginning some discussions later today on health care in order to try to iron out the differences that remain between the House and the Senate bill and try to get something, hopefully, to his desk quite quickly.
With that, Gibbs pivoted to a question from Helen Thomas. In a droll, offstage gesture, another journalist stood waving Briam Lamb’s letter requesting access for C-SPAN cameras. Seems it’s not that hard to get ahold of. Opening up those discussions was something Obama proposed as a candidate for president — part of the transparency thing.
Gibbs can duck C-SPAN, but he cannot fool Koffler!
