A crestfallen Glenn Beck admitted that his faith in former Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz to withhold his support of Donald Trump was misplaced.
On his radio show Monday, Beck confronted Cruz on why he endorsed the GOP nominee last week, after telling conservative voters at the Republican convention in July to “vote your conscience.”
Cruz said that the race is a “binary choice” and that he believed Democrat Hillary Clinton to be the worst of the two options.
After the interview, Beck said he believed it was the first time he saw the Texas senator “calculate.”
“And I will tell you, that’s not what I expected, but there was something in there,” he said. “And I’m not going to go into it. There is something there, where I have private conversations with people. And I know private — I know what was said, and I know — I know the story.
“And for the very first time, I heard Ted Cruz calculate. And when that happened, the whole thing fell apart for me. And it’s my fault. It’s my fault for believing that men can actually be George Washington. It’s my fault.”
Beck endorsed Cruz in the GOP primary and has continued to criticize Trump as insufficiently conservative and even dangerous to the U.S.
Beck said, however, he still believed Cruz to be “a good man.”
