OK when Tony Kornheiser opened his radio program today reminding all of us that his show is based on comedy. There is satire and often his ranting is meant for entertainment purposes and not really to be taken seriously.
We all know by now that a recent rant on cycling lanes in Washington went viral and zoomed all the way to France where sports super star Lance Armstrong took Mr. Tony to the wood shed via Twitter. Tweeting that Mr. Tony was an “F—ing idiot” for his insensitive remarks.
Armstrong speaking to Mr. Tony from France was willing to accept the broadcasters apology and thanked him for reaching out to him to bring attention to cycling and cars.
Armstrong was able to give Mr. Tony and his listeners the mindset of why people who drive cars and those who ride bikes need to find to learn to get along.
It was an educational 15 minutes that allowed both Armstrong and Mr. Tony talk about all aspects of cycling.
They also talked about how things can be blown out of proportion in the new world of new media and things can really go global in a matter of minutes.
There was even an interesting interview where Mr. Tony and Armstrong talked about the sport – all in a positive way.
All in all it was a very good conversation and Mr. Tony will be riding a bike and the two will actually be going for a bike ride and a beer sometime before the year is over.
Mr. Tony promised that the rants will be over. Unlikely but my guess is that he will be a little more careful and still be entertaining.
It was also good to hear Lance and Tony work things out and impart quality info at the same time,
