Romney rips rivals for Bain attacks

Mitt Romney, during his New Hampshire victory speech, associated his Republican rivals for mounting an attack on his career as an executive at Bain Capital worthy of President Obama.

“President Obama wants to put free enterprise on trial, and in the last few days have seen some Republicans join forces with him — this is such a mistake for our party and our nation,” Romney said. “The country already has a leader who divides us with the politics of envy.”

Romney criticized Obama and his Republican rivals — Gingrich the loudest in attacking Bain, though Romney did not name him — for stoking “resentment of success” as a campaign strategy.

Romney adopted an emphatically non-populist tone — “If this election is a bidding war for who can promise the most benefits, then I’m not your president,” he said, for instance — while promising to cut government spending and “restore America,” especially the American economy.
