Student’s explosive detonates, causing school evacuation

A Crossland High School freshman was charged with taking an explosive to school after it went off in his chemistry class Monday morning, a spokesman for the Prince George’s County Fire/Emergency Medical Services Department said. No one was hurt, and the school was briefly evacuated. The homemade device was in the 15-year-old student’s backpack when it was detonated. – Freeman Klopott

Police probe captain’s collision with Metrobus

A D.C. police captain is under investigation in connection with a collision last week between his department vehicle and a Metrobus.

Metropolitan Police Department spokeswoman Traci Hughes said she could not comment about the case but that Capt. Melvin Gresham was under investigation by the Internal Affairs Bureau. Gresham remains on the job but had his badge and gun taken away and has been ordered to have no contact with the public. – Scott McCabe

MS-13 member sentenced 19 1/2 years for abetting rape

A Hyattsville MS-13 gang member who helped hold down two girls while 10 of his fellow gang members raped them in his home was sentenced to 19 years and six months in prison Monday on racketeering charges after reaching a plea agreement with federal prosecutors, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland said. Carlos Vasquez Martinez, 24, was a member of MS-13 from 2002 through March 2007. After the rape incident, he drove several gang members to California so they could avoid arrest. Martinez provided prosecutors details on the rape that helped put others behind bars. – Freeman Klopott

Hyattsville man arrested in alleged fatal beating

Cesar Euelder Carbajal-Aldana, 26, of Hyattsville, was arrested early Sunday morning hours after he allegedly beat Isaias Lopez-Vail, 34, to death with a baseball bat, Prince George’s County police said. Lopez-Vail arrived at a party on the 1300 block of Merrimac Drive and started arguing with Carbajal-Aldana, who then grabbed a bat, beat Lopez-Vail until he lost consciousness, and fled. – Freeman Klopott
