ATLANTA (AP) — Emory University officials say College of Arts and Sciences faculty have voted against a motion of no confidence against President James Wagner.
In the winter edition of Emory Magazine, Wagner used the 1787 three-fifths compromise on slavery to make a point about finding common ground in politics. Wagner later apologized, saying he considered slavery heinous and inhuman, and that he should have stated that clearly.

Emory officials say College of Arts and Sciences faculty voted 201-133 against the no confidence motion Friday. The College of Arts and Sciences constitutes about 20 percent of Emory’s roughly 3,000 faculty members.
Board of Trustees Chairman Ben F. Jonson says the board extends strong and undivided support to Wagner, and believes he is well suited to remain at the helm of the university.
